OLÁ Backpackers in Lisbon

zuletzt aktualisiert am 05.01.2010

Olá backpackers is one of the smallest hostels in the world!   We are a cozy, little and typical Portuguese apartment, in the middle of historic center, with a friendly environment, that welcomes every independent and cool travellers with a genuine and warm smile. Here you will live like the Portuguese people do, with all the comfort, equipment and care needed to make your stay unforgetable.   This is a shared self-catering apartment with really tiny areas, which is perfect to provide the genuine Portuguese experience, but are not ideal for travellers looking for big rooms.   You will share your experience and the facilities with other travelers. Probably you'll make friends and partnerships to have fun or explore LIsbon. You can even cook your meals all together. The travelers set the atmosphere here - so, we welcome all the enthusiastic people that have no trouble about sharing.   The hostel is located right next to Bairro Alto, in the heart of Lisbon, between Principe Real & Sao Bento.   Our front desk will open whenever it is needed. We are reachable by phone from 9am to 8pm and always available in emergencies.   The web works 24/7. You can either use our computer or connect your own through wireless. We provide an access code.   We try to provide all the information you might need. Here you can ask for help, tips, maps, tours, special walks, car rentals, buggies, laundry, etc. We post, weekly, sugestions about events, exhibitions, places, restaurants, nightlife and all the fun that happens around the city.   The small library with books and guides about Lisbon, a good selection of Portuguese traditional music (Fado) and new music among some other worldwide music, a vast DVD collection and a DVD player, can also be a support to learn about the city.   For the travelers that would like to try the Portuguese way of cooking, we've had put together simple and healthy Portuguese recipes, along with free olive oil, sea salt, spices, vinegar, garlic, onions and a dish washer in a very typically tiny kittchen.   We can assure you though that it is a great place to have the real Portuguese experience – a calm, long, healthy and delicious meal.   We can lodge large groups in apartments from 5-12 people.   Additonal facillities (for an extra fee):   - additional 1 euro for each set of bath and foot towels (in the hostel) - additional 3 Euros for every check in between 8pm-10pm and Saturdays (by booking, not per person) - 5 Euros for check-ins after 10pm, Sundays and Portuguese holidays.(in the hostel and apartments) - 2 Euros each security locker. (by booking) - 1 Night Fee of 2 Euros per person, for the travelers that want to spend one night only. We can only accept cash. Every traveler should pay upon arrival.

Wegbeschreibung

The most comfortable way to get at OLá backpackers! Is by taxi, especially for the travelers that arrive by plane. It is not that expansive. Drivers are nicer if you catch them in the Departures instead of the Arrivals.

Anyway, be careful, they often try to charge more than they should when the client does not speak Portuguese (unfortunately!). They have a machine showing the price and to that is correct to add an extra amount for the luggage.

Both prices are shown and at the end of the ride they shall push a button to have the total amount. You don’t have to pay more than that. Usually the ride’s price stands between 10-15 euros, depending on the city’s traffic. Always ask for a receipt at the end and say the driver that our street is near by &quot,Assembleia de Sao Bento&quot,, or they might pretend they do not know where is the street and try to get you to another place, mainly at late hours. Other then that, taxi drivers are totally safe.

If you are planning to arrive by train, you can choose between stoping at Oriente Station, Santa Apolonia Station or Rossio Station.

From Oriente you'll easily find the Metro (Subway, Underground). Get the Red Line towards Alameda station. Once there, transfer to the Green Line in the direction of Cais Do Sodre. Get out of the train when you reach the Baixa-Chiado stop (the 6th stop) and follow the directions that say Chiado. Once you are back in the streets, walk towards Praca Luis de Camoes (it’s a plaza with a statue in the middle, really easy to spot).

You’ll find the 28 TRAM stop. Catch the one that goes to Campo Ourique and ask the driver to let you know when the tram reaches the Sao Bento/Cç. Estrela stop. Back in the streets, walk through Rua de Sao Bento until you find Rua Nova da Piedade on your right side (takes 3 minutes). Make a right to get into that street and turn left in the first cross you find. Welcome! You got to Rua dos Prazeres, where our front-office is located.

From Santa Apolonia Station, you can take the Metro (Subway, Underground) towards Amadora Este and stop at the second stop (Baixa_Chiado). Then, follow the directions written above to find the 28 TRAM and prepare yourself to enjoy a funny 10 minutes ride.

It’s the best way to start right away exploring the city’s vibrations – you can watch the charming old architecture, the faces of our people, feel the smells and the noises and the colors that make Lisbon a specially contradictory and exciting city.

From Rossio Station, you can either walk (15 minutes climbing the hill) or walk until Rua Do Carmo and take Elevador Santa Justa, a beautiful Tram-Elevator from 1902 (the only vertical in Lisbon), classified as a National Monument. It takes you to Chiado. Climb Rua do Carmo until you find Rua Garret. Make a right, walk straight (2 minutes) until you find Praca Luis de Camoes and the 28 Tram. Enjoy the ride and follow the directions on the top (for Oriente Station).

We can also provide a transfer, which is the securest way to get to OLA backpackers! if you’re planning to arrive at late night hours. On weekdays, from 8am to 8pm) we charge 20 euros (until 4 people), 40 euros (between 5 and 8 people), 65 euros (between 9 and 12 people) and the prices have to be negotiated if you need to transfer for more than 12 people. On the weekends we charge an additional 10 euros. From 8pm to 8am, will charge an extra 20 euros. We can only provide this service with two days notice.
