Tam-Awan Village in Baguio City

During the years when the entire City of Baguio was still grazing land for large herds of cattle, Pinsao, location of the Tam-awan Village was one vast pastureland. A spring beside Tam-awan is the source of a body of water that once served as a watering hole for cattle. Thus, the place became associated with chanum, which in Ibaloi, means water. Adopting the name to symbolize its vision, Chanum Foundation, Inc. views its role to be as nurturing and life-giving as the spring in Tam-awan Village.

More than a showcase of indigenous craftsmanship, the foundation envisions the Tam-awan Village as an ideal venue for art and cultural activities aimed to enhance the appreciation of Cordillera life, its culture and its history.

&lt,&lt, Special Features of Huts &gt,&gt,
** The Ifugao House **
This house is compact and, though deceptively simple, its architecture is quite sophisticated. Built by clever mostisans without nails or hardware, it exemplifies the exactness of Ifugao construction. With the exemption of reed and cogon used in the roofs, the entire house uses heavy hand-hewn timber. Elevated to about shoulder height by four posts usually made of hard wood, the house, with periodic re-roofing, can last several generations.

** Dukligan Hut **
The fertility hut is such that it is where a married couple resides after a year of inability to produce a child. The shaman performs a ritual offering to the male and female bulols. The couple will then stay in the hut for a month or so. If after this period expires and still they are still unable to produce a child, the man has the right to find another woman, althought the marriage is still in effect. The cycle is repeated and then the woman may now find another man. The purpose of which is to determine who among the couple is infertile.

** Batad Hut **
This is the biggest Ifugao house in the village. It has a mezzanine and the dormer provides for the sunset view.

** Anaba Hut **
This hut is the oldest hut in the village. It was built in 1898. This is located in view deck 1. The kitchen is still preserved and functional.

** Nagor hut **
This hut is the smallest Ifugao house as it can have only three occupants maximum. Its kitchen is also still preserved and functional.

** Kinakin Hut **
This is the smaller version of the Batad hut, without the dormer.

** Bangaan Hut **
This is similar to Dukligan, but without the concept for its being another fertility hut.

** The Kalinga House **
This is more spacious commode and is made with the same hand-hewn pinewood.

** Lukkong Hut **
The “binayon” is the traditional octagonal house of Southern Kalinga Province. This is purposely constructed for rich families. Built in 1923, Tam-awan Village is proud to present one of the three remaining such houses in the country today. The hearth is also preserved and functional.

** Bugnay hut **
This four-sided hut is for the middle class family. It was built in 1921 and is now being utilized as a secondary gallery, thus the hearth was removed.

** The Dap-ay and The Ato **
In the Mountain Provinces, the Dap-ay is strictly for men only, while it is open for both male and female members of the community in most parts of Cordillera. Here, various rituals are performed and a shaman as head of the council and as elder of the community performs these rituals. Storytelling, peace pacts, and village issues are performed in the Dap-ay. The Ato, on the other hand is the house beside the Dap-ay. This is where the female members commune as their men are in the Dap-ay.

** The Bontoc Rice Granary **
This granary was acquired only last March 2006. It was built in 1950. It is a small granary and can allow only one person inside.
