We are the highest rated 'bbh' backpacker in Hokitika and enjoy welcoming our guests to the West Coast. We are across the road from the beach and town is a forty minute walk along it.

Birdsong accommodation is an ideal choice for couples or small groups and independent travelers looking for a cozy room in a relaxing atmosphere. The lodge can accommodate up to 20 persons at any one time. All beds are made up with cozy duvets provided. We invite you to enjoy the sunsets, join us for a BBQ on the deck, or sit and watch for dolphins from the comfort of our lounge.

At Birdsong you will always receive a warm and friendly welcome from hosts Neil, Kerry and Sid the dog. This recently renovated home is a perfect base from which to explore Hokitika and its surrounding natural beauty.

It’s first choice as a place to re-energize in a cozy bean chair by the log fire, chill-out and enjoy the stunning sea views from the comfort of a tastefully decorated communal lounge. A perfect spot from which to enjoy an awesome West Coast sunset!

We are on the main highway (number 6).
Two kilometres North of Hokitika
Two hours north of Fox glacier
Thirty mins south of Greymouth

From Christchurch
Driving directly from Christchurch it will take around 3.5 hours to reach Hokitika. If you’ve time on your side, take the opportunity to explore Arthur’s Pass along the way. Once you arrive on the West Coast at Kumara Junction, head south on State Highway 6 for just 18km. You will see Birdsong accommodation on the left hand side, 2km before Hokitika township.

Trans Scenic Train
This is rated as one of the top 5 train journeys in the world. If you chose to travel by Trans Scenic from Christchurch to Greymouth, Atomic Shuttles provide a convenient service to get to Hokitika. (Pre-booking is recommended) Ask the driver to be dropped off at Birdsong in advance, before reaching Hokitika town centre. This way you will be dropped right outside!
