Hostel Galeria 13 in Salvador de Bahia
So Hostel Galeria 13 had a great first year. Paulo(very English name) native english speaking owner arrived in December 2007 to Pelourinho slightly concerned as lots of other hostels were claiming that the area was suffering a low low moment. But we have applied a friendly & helpful approach & it paid off.
The hostel started to gain itself quite a name, people started appearing out of no where with comments of “heh we have heard about your great dog Spartan” or “we came because you have really great cheap veggie food & Spanish tapas”.
So I learned something very important, If you have the right outlook you can succeed when others are failing,& something else if you offer something special don´t get bogged down by other people´s gloom & doom you can make it against all the odds.
So now its the next chapter. The team has grown I have found great people to share the experience, they have given a boost of bright new energy to the hostel & also brought refreshing idea´s, yeh they have grabbed some of the glory from me but heh I have to be grown up & share my baby.I used to only read my name on our comments page(it felt great)but it’s a lot busier & its not possible to cover all the shifts. Some of these super people have moved on,but the great local team stays the same & other members join & revitalise the vibe of the hostel. I know our staff (that includes Spartan & zulu) are what make us stand out in the “Pelo”,well its what make´s all great hostel´s special. So you guys are going to be comfortable & safe in your temporary home whilst visiting this amazing city.
From the street the old house deceives the on-looker as it seems to have only two floors, but in fact it offers three floors, the upper two divided into five dorm rooms with wooden floors & strong bunks made from local wood, all the rooms are with en suite showers ..
Downstairs you will find the large area divided between the reception, stylish bar/restaurant & Moroccan chill out room with the interesting options to relax & mix with your fellow guests.
Running along side the house you will discover the super garden & terrace area where breakfast is served & where you can hang out in a hammock or swap stories with follow travelers whilst sipping on the hostel house special “caipirinha”.
The hostel also attracts lots of other hostel guests & locals as the garden area is a unique spot in 'pelo' to relax & charge up for more action.
Watch this space, the hostel will be getting a face lift on the ground floor it will be very original, hope we are done when you visit.
Another unique feature is the 'SKYPE' phone, need to phone home? make it from your bed or maybe the hammock, its amazingly cheap & certainly a lot better than an internet cafe oh yeh & more private!

From the bus station:Cross the pedestrian footbridge from the bus station to Iguatemi Mall and, from the bus stop outside, take the executivo bus to Praça da Sé. Get off at the last bus stop and walk to São Francisco Church, the hostel is located on the same street at the bottom of the hill. An alternative is to catch the Barroquinha bus from the bus station, get off at the Insinuante Shop in Baixa dos Sapateiros and walk up Frei Vicente Street, in front of Teatro XVIII walk up Ordem Terceira Street (old Inácio Accioli) towards São Francisco Church. It's the third building on the left, as shown on the map.
From the airport:
Take the airport-Praça da Sé executivo bus, get off at the last bus stop and walk to São Francisco Church, the hostel is located on the same street at the bottom of the hill. You can follow the map to the hostel.
After 8.00pm we recommend taking a transfer offered by the hostel. To book the transfer, inform us the flight number, date and time of arrival.
Taxi or own transport:
As we are located on one of the few streets in Pelourinho where taxis can drive along, you have the option of catching a cab if you are getting into town late. If you are coming by your own transport we have the great advantage of having a car park right in front. So if you are some crazy guys motoring around South America (I met a guy myself who was touring South America by motorbike, but missed out Salvador because he could not find parking) you can leave your ‘baby’ as near to your bed as physically possible.
